Canker Sores: Causes and Treatment

Canker-Sores-Causes-and-Treatment.jpgCanker sores are a small ulceration located on the mouth or lips and they are not uncommon in many dental patients. These can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress or small injuries. You should not be alarmed if they appear after a visit at the dental clinic. These small affections are bothersome but the discomfort will usually last only a few days. A dentist who sees that you are prone to canker sores after an initial visit can recommend various dietary changes and if needed, medication.

Causes for canker sores

The small ulcers known as canker sores are found in the mouth or on along the lips, cheeks or tongue. They cause a light discomfort that can vary in pain according to their size. Usually, they make it uncomfortable to eat or drink as per usual.

The causes for canker sores can be different, ranging from stress or injury to being caused by certain foods (most likely acidic fruits like oranges or lemons; these can also worsen the condition in some cases).

In rarer situations, complex canker sores can be a signal for an existing underlying condition like various vitamin deficiencies, gastrointestinal diseases or celiac diseases. You can talk to a dentist about this problem if you have canker sores when you visit the office or get them immediately afterwards. He will be able to refer you to a specialist if he considers that the condition is caused by an internal factor.

Canker sores treatment

The common symptoms of canker sores are not easy to ignore or misinterpret. They can cause pain in the mouth or on the tongue or cheeks and are identified as a fluid-filled blister. A difference exists between cold sores that usually appear on the outside of the lips and canker sores that are present on the inside of the mouth and can appear almost anywhere on the soft palate.

While canker sores will recede in a few days without treatment, you can use over-the-counter medication for a targeted treatment.
